WHEN IN THE WINNING HOUR
When in the winning hours I hold my pride,
And in the swelled head burst my soul to win,
I should in empty glory know I’ve lied,
And battle off my ass’s foolish grin :
For time will turn me sudden over heels,
And leave me nothing in the cold world’s eyes -
God knows I know how that torment feels
When frippery blows off its’ disguise.

Ho there! Be rum and quiet, and have no name,
Ho there! Take counsel, pretend at least to wise;
Deliver us from boasts that lead to shame
For in such face we hold the greater prize :

But inside, carve a wicked hour and scream,
Let no one hear - but celebrate your dream.

This poem is all about that moment when you know that triumph is coming your way, but you also feel that you're not being true to yourself.
